A warm welcome to Department of Life Science

The Department of Life Sciences at the University of Calicut was established in February 1978, towards the end of the fifth plan period, with support from the University Grants Commission (UGC). It originated from a proposal to promote integrated teaching and research in Physiology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, an interdisciplinary approach strongly recommended by a UGC review committee that has since proven highly effective.
The department offers postgraduate M.Sc. programs in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Human Physiology, along with open electives, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs. Shared coursework across these disciplines fosters a comprehensive understanding of life sciences, preparing graduates for prominent roles in institutions such as the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, leading medical colleges, and pharmaceutical industries.
Research forms a core focus, encompassing areas like Bioprocess and Microbial Technology, Neutraceuticals and Bioactives, Behavioral Physiology, Photobiology and Phytochemicals, Cell and Molecular Biology, Pigment Research, and Microbiology. The department is supported by modern research laboratories, a dedicated library with an online catalogue, access to PG dissertations, a digital library, and subscriptions to major databases including ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, Oxford Journals, Annual Reviews, and Sage Journals, alongside resources like a chemical catalogue and placement services.
Committed to excellence in education, innovative research, and societal contributions, the Department of Life Sciences continues to advance biological sciences in India, with ongoing activities reflecting its vibrant academic environment as of late 2025.
